Tradify Review for Fencers UK (2026)
Tradify Review for Fencers UK 2026: Is It Worth It?
Tradify is one of the most popular job management apps among UK tradespeople, but it is mostly known in the plumbing, electrical, and heating world. This review is specifically for fencers: what Tradify does well, where it falls short, and whether it is worth the subscription for a fencing business in 2026.

Short answer: yes, if you are quoting more than a handful of jobs a month, mixing per-metre residential work with day-rate contract fencing, or currently pricing jobs from memory rather than a system, Tradify will pay for itself in consistent pricing and fewer disputed invoices almost immediately.
What Is Tradify?
Tradify is job management software designed for tradespeople and small trade businesses. It covers the full job lifecycle: from the initial enquiry and quote, through scheduling and on-site updates, to invoicing and payment collection.
It is cloud-based, works on iOS and Android, and has a web dashboard for desktop use. Everything syncs in real time, so if you have a team member or a subbie on a different site, you can both see the same job information.
What Tradify Does for Fencers
Flexible Quoting by Metre, Bay, or Day Rate
This is the feature that matters most for fencers specifically. Every Tradify quote is built from line items with a quantity, a cost, a markup and a price, so the quantity can be metres of fence, a number of bays or panels, or days on site. That means one account handles a per-metre residential garden fence and a day-rate agricultural stock fencing contract without any workarounds. Save your standard rates by fence type and height, closeboard, panel, post and rail, so a repeat quote takes minutes rather than starting from scratch.
Line-Item Extras
Hard-dig charges, extra gates, and additional posts add as their own line items rather than getting folded into the base rate. When a customer asks why the final invoice is higher than the quote, you have a clear, itemised answer rather than an argument.
Deposits and the Balance, Raised When You Choose
When we tested Tradify, an accepted quote could be invoiced five ways: the entire quote, selected line items, a percentage of the quote, a fixed amount, or the remaining amount. For fencing that maps neatly onto how most fencers get paid: raise a percentage or fixed-amount deposit invoice once the start date is agreed and the materials are on order, then a remaining-amount invoice for the balance when the last panel is up. You decide when each invoice goes out, nothing is triggered automatically by the customer accepting.
Job Scheduling
The scheduling view shows all your jobs on a calendar. You can drag and drop jobs to rearrange the week, which matters in a trade where a rained-off week or waterlogged ground regularly pushes a start date back and the whole diary needs shuffling as a result.
On-Site Updates
From the Tradify app on your phone, you can log time against a job, add materials used, take photos, and leave notes. If a customer questions a hard-dig charge or disputes where the boundary line was agreed, a timestamped photo taken before you started digging is worth more than a memory of the conversation.
Invoicing
Once a job is done, you invoice straight from the accepted quote, so nothing is typed in twice. If you took a deposit, the remaining-amount option works out the balance for you. You send the invoice by email or text with a payment link, can switch on card payments per invoice (card payments need setting up first and transaction fees apply), and on Pro and above Tradify can chase unpaid invoices with automatic reminders.
Accounting Integration
Tradify integrates with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage. If your accountant uses any of them, your invoices and expenses sync across, so there is no re-entering data at year end.
What We Found Testing Tradify (and What Carries Over to Fencing)
- Private margins on every line. Each line has its own cost, markup and gross profit. The customer’s copy only shows the selling price, so you can mark up panels, posts and postcrete without the customer seeing what you paid at the merchant.
- Enter the cost first, then the markup. One quirk: if you type a cost while the price is still £0, Tradify shows the markup as -100% because it works the markup back from the price. Set the cost, then the markup or price, and it behaves.
- Quote to job in one step. Accepting the quote offered to create the job straight away, with the customer, address and description already filled in.
- Deposits can be a penny or two out. A 30% deposit showed as £186.75 in the dialog but the invoice came out at £186.76, and the deposit plus the remaining-amount invoice totalled £622.52 against a £622.50 quote. It is only 2p, but on a deposit-then-balance fencing job it is worth glancing at the final figure before you send it.
- UK money, mostly UK wording. Prices and totals were in pounds with a UK date and address layout, although a couple of address field labels still say “Suburb” and “Region”.
Pricing a Fence in Tradify: A Worked Example
Here is how a typical domestic job would be laid out as Tradify line items: a 20 metre run of 1.83m (6ft) panels on timber posts, replacing an old fence. The figures are illustrative, not current merchant prices, so swap in your own costs and rates.
| Line item | Qty | Cost each | Markup | Customer sees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fence panels, 1.83m | 11 | £35.00 | 20% | £462.00 |
| Timber posts, 100mm | 12 | £18.00 | 20% | £259.20 |
| Gravel boards | 11 | £12.00 | 20% | £158.40 |
| Postcrete (bags) | 24 | £8.00 | 20% | £230.40 |
| Labour, per metre | 20 | – | – | £600.00 |
| Remove and dispose of old fence | 1 | – | – | £120.00 |
| Total (before VAT) | £1,830.00 |
In this example the materials cost £925 and are sold at £1,110, so the job carries £185 of materials margin on top of the labour, and Tradify shows you that gross profit on the quote without it ever appearing on the customer’s copy. If you are VAT registered, 20% takes the total to £2,196. A 50% deposit invoice would then be £1,098, with the remaining amount invoiced once the job is finished.
Two things fencers usually add as separate lines rather than burying in the per-metre rate: a hard-dig or concrete-removal extra, so the customer can see exactly why the price moved, and a gate with its own posts and ironmongery. Tradify’s quote options also let you put two versions in front of the customer, for example panels against closeboard, so they choose rather than ask you to requote.
The Materials Maths Tradify Won’t Do for You
Tradify works out prices, not quantities, so you still need to count the materials yourself before they go on the quote. For a straight run of panels:
- Panels: the run length divided by the panel width, rounded up. 20m ÷ 1.83m = 10.9, so 11 panels.
- Posts: one more than the number of panels on a straight run, so 12. Add a post for every corner and both sides of every gate.
- Gravel boards: usually one per panel.
- Postcrete: commonly one to two bags per post depending on the post size and hole, so check the bag’s own guidance. We used two per post in the example above.
Once you have worked out a standard job like this, save the lines as price list items in Tradify so the next 20 metre quote is a case of changing the quantities.
Where Tradify Falls Short for Fencers
No Boundary or Materials Calculator
Tradify has no built-in tool for calculating panel counts, post spacing, or concrete quantities from a run length, and no way to document a boundary dispute beyond attaching a photo to the job. You will still need to work out materials quantities separately and rely on clear written notes and photos, rather than a dedicated feature, to protect yourself in a boundary disagreement.
No Dedicated Weather-Hold Workflow
You can reschedule a job manually when ground conditions or weather force a delay, but there is no automated weather-hold status or client notification built specifically for that scenario. It works, it just takes a manual step rather than a purpose-built one.
Limited Client Portal
Tradify’s client-facing features are basic, quote approval and invoice payment, essentially. There is no client portal where a homeowner can log in to see job history or photos over time. Jobber has a stronger client portal if this matters to your business. Tradify does take online card payments on every plan, so the difference is the portal, not getting paid.
Tradify Pricing for UK Fencers
Tradify is priced per user across three plans: Lite at £34, Pro at £37 and Plus at £44 per user a month (from Tradify’s UK pricing page, checked September 2026). Every plan includes quoting, job management, scheduling, invoicing, and integrations with Xero and QuickBooks. Progress invoicing, automatic quote and invoice reminders and compliance certificates start on Pro, and the AI SmartTools are on Plus only.
A 14-day free trial is available with no credit card required.
Who Should Use Tradify as a Fencer?
Tradify works best for fencers who:
- Quote more than a handful of jobs a month
- Mix per-metre residential fencing with day-rate contract work
- Currently price jobs from memory, a phone call, or a rough mental price list
- Want deposits linked to a confirmed start date rather than quote acceptance
- Want a tool that connects to their accountant’s software for MTD
If you are a solo fencer doing one or two small domestic jobs a week off the back of word of mouth, and your current setup genuinely works, Tradify might be more than you need right now. But if you have ever undercharged a job because you could not remember what you charged the customer’s neighbour, it is the right tool.
Tradify vs the Alternatives for Fencers
| App | Best For | Fencing Fit | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tradify | Flexible pricing + invoicing | Strong, per-metre/bay/day rate in one app | ~£34/month |
| Jobber | Client portal, online payments | Strong for direct residential work | $29/month (USD, annual) |
| Traddie | Budget job management | Good, flexible quoting from £9.99/month | ~£9.99/month |
| QuickBooks | Accounting + MTD VAT | No job management | ~£10/month |
Jobber is worth considering alongside Tradify, particularly if most of your work is direct residential fencing where a client portal and online card payments make a real difference to how quickly a deposit lands.
The Verdict
Tradify is a well-built, practical tool that fits fencing admin genuinely well, particularly the flexibility to price per metre, per bay, or as a day rate on the same account, which most job management software does not handle cleanly. It will not calculate your materials quantities or manage a boundary dispute for you, but for quoting, scheduling, and invoicing, it is a strong fit.
The 14-day free trial is risk-free. Give it a fortnight and see if it fits your workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions: Tradify for Fencers
Yes, Tradify works well for fencing businesses, particularly those mixing per-metre residential quoting with day-rate agricultural or contract work. The flexible pricing model is a genuine standout, and you can invoice a deposit as a percentage or fixed amount of the quote, then the remaining balance on completion, which matches how most fencers actually take payment. If you are currently quoting from memory, Tradify will pay for itself in consistent pricing within the first month.
Tradify costs from £34 a month per user on the Lite plan, which includes quoting, job management, scheduling, invoicing, and integrations with Xero and QuickBooks. A 14-day free trial is available with no credit card required.
Yes, Tradify lets you build a quote priced per linear metre, per bay, or as a day rate on the same account, which suits fencers who move between residential garden fencing and agricultural or stock fencing contract work depending on the job.
The main limitations for fencers are: no built-in materials or panel-count calculator, no dedicated weather-hold workflow beyond manual rescheduling, and a limited client portal compared to Jobber. If online card payments for residential clients are a priority, Jobber’s client portal is meaningfully better for that use case.
Yes. In our test, an accepted quote could be invoiced as the entire quote, selected line items, a percentage, a fixed amount or the remaining amount. Most fencers raise a percentage or fixed-amount deposit once the start date is agreed and materials are ordered, then a remaining-amount invoice on completion. In our test a 30% deposit came out 1p higher than the dialog showed, so check the final figure.
Yes, Tradify integrates directly with both Xero and QuickBooks. Invoices raised in Tradify sync to your accounting software automatically, and expenses recorded against jobs flow through as well, removing manual data entry and helping keep your records MTD-compliant.
Jobber is the strongest alternative for fencers doing mostly direct residential work, with a more developed client portal where customers can approve quotes and pay deposits online by card. Traddie is the strongest budget alternative, covering similar ground to Tradify from £9.99 a month.
