Debbie Review UK Tradespeople 2026
Debbie is an all-in-one invoicing, job tracking and tax app built for UK sole traders, built around one idea: upload your bank statement and it works out your tax for you. We put it through real, repeated hands-on testing over several weeks, quotes, invoices, mileage, bank reconciliation, the lot, found a handful of genuine early bugs, and reported every one straight to the solo founder. Here’s what we found, and how fast it got fixed.
What Is Debbie?
Debbie covers quotes and invoices, job and customer tracking, mileage, and CIS for UK tradespeople, then layers a tax engine on top built for Making Tax Digital. Upload a bank statement (PDF, CSV, OFX or QIF) and it reads and categorises every transaction automatically, income, expenses, drawings, even rent if you also run a rental property through it. It’s a progressive web app rather than an App Store download, add it to your phone’s home screen straight from the browser and it works like a native app.
What We Tested
The core workflow
Customers, quotes, jobs, invoices, mileage, home office expenses, documents and reports, tested as a real sole trader would use it day to day.
Bank statement reconciliation
Built a realistic 8-line test statement, an invoice payment, trade-merchant purchases, fuel, insurance, an owner’s drawing, and two personal purchases, and uploaded it.
What we found wrong
- Send failures with no error shown – a quote or invoice would hang on “Sending…” with nothing telling you it had actually failed.
- Silent duplicate sends – a failed send sometimes retried itself once in the background, so the customer occasionally received the same quote or invoice twice.
- Missing error on the quotes screen – if a customer had no email saved, the failure never surfaced anywhere in the interface.
- A refused send still marked as sent – the quote generated a customer accept link and showed as sent, even though the email had actually bounced.
What the founder did about it
- All four send-related bugs fixed the same day they were reported, with proper error messages now surfacing instead of a silent hang or false positive
- A later bug we found, the Overview tab’s totals not refreshing until a full page reload after approving an imported bank statement, was also fixed the same day, with a regression test added specifically so it can’t quietly come back
We reported every issue directly to Debbie’s solo founder, James. Every single one, across two separate rounds of testing weeks apart, was fixed the same day it was flagged, which is a genuinely rare turnaround for a one-person team.
How the Bank Statement Reconciliation Actually Performed
This is Debbie’s headline feature, so we tested it properly rather than taking the claim at face value. All 8 lines in our test statement were categorised correctly with zero manual corrections needed: the incoming payment was matched straight to the existing open invoice, trade-merchant purchases were mapped to cost of goods, fuel was correctly separated out as travel rather than materials, a transfer to the owner’s own name was flagged as drawings rather than an expense, and two personal purchases were identified and excluded from the tax figures entirely. The resulting profit and loss figures reconciled exactly once checked by hand.
The receipt scanner runs on the same engine and covers the half of the picture a bank line can’t: we threw a real test receipt at it and it read the supplier, date and all four line items correctly, sensibly ignoring the subtotal, VAT and total lines rather than trying to log them as items in their own right. Between the two, the bank statement sorts the money coming in and out, and the receipt scanner captures what each purchase actually was, so cost of goods is built from real line items rather than one lump sum. Together they’re why someone can run their books without typing much in by hand.
Who Is Debbie Best Suited To?
Good to Know
Worth knowing before you start
- Built for MTD, not yet filing to HMRC directly – Debbie prepares everything and hands you a ready-to-file Accountant Pack, but submitting your return is still a step you or your accountant do separately for now.
- It’s a web app, not an App Store download – you add it to your home screen from your phone’s browser rather than installing it from the App Store or Play Store.
- Still a young product – the bugs we found were real, but every one was fixed the same day, which says more about the pace of development than the bugs themselves.
First month free, no card needed. From £10/month for one business after that, with Duo and Triple plans if you run more than one.
Verdict – Is Debbie Worth It?
Debbie’s bank statement reconciliation is the real reason to try it, we tested it with a realistic mixed statement and it got every line right without a single manual correction. The invoicing and job tracking side does the basics well too, once some genuine early bugs on the sending flow were found and fixed, both times within the same day of being reported. For a sole trader who wants their tax sorted with the least possible admin, the free first month is worth using properly before deciding.
