DeWalt vs Makita vs Milwaukee UK (2026): Which Cordless Platform?

DeWalt vs Makita vs Milwaukee is the big decision for any tradesperson buying cordless tools, because once you own the batteries you tend to stay put. Here is how the three platforms compare in the UK on batteries, storage and warranty, and how to choose before Black Friday.

Quick answer

There is no single best brand. Buy into the platform your firm or mates already use, then check it has the specialist tools you need. DeWalt stands out if you want one battery for everything, because FLEXVOLT batteries also run its 18V tools. Makita registers tools to 3 years and now gives batteries 2 years as standard. Milwaukee pairs with Packout, the most popular modular storage system.

How we compared: we used each brand’s published UK warranty terms and product information, checked in October 2026, plus trade press coverage of Makita’s 2025 battery warranty change. We have not hands-on tested the three ranges against each other, and terms can change, so check the brand’s UK site before you buy.

The Key Differences

Battery platforms

All three brands build their main range around an 18V battery: DeWalt 18V XR, Makita 18V LXT and Milwaukee M18. Each also has a compact 12V range for lighter tools (DeWalt 12V XR, Makita CXT and Milwaukee M12) and a higher-power option. The important difference is how that higher-power option fits in. DeWalt’s 54V FLEXVOLT batteries also run its 18V XR tools, so one battery covers both. Makita’s 40V max XGT range uses its own batteries, separate from LXT. Milwaukee’s MX FUEL battery is aimed at heavy equipment rather than hand-held tools.

Storage

Each brand has its own stackable storage, and many tools are sold in it, so your storage tends to follow your batteries. DeWalt has two systems, the lighter TSTAK and the heavier ToughSystem 2.0. Makita has MakPac cases and the newer MakTrak rolling system. Milwaukee has Packout, the system most others get compared to. See our Packout alternatives and MakPac vs Packout guides.

Warranty

Warranty terms differ more than most people realise, and all three reward you for registering quickly. DeWalt’s UK page describes 3-year coverage on tools, made up of a 1-year manufacturing warranty and a 2-year service warranty, with standard batteries and chargers covered for 6 months and POWERSTACK batteries for a year, extendable by two more on registration. Milwaukee offers a free extension to 3 years if you register a new power tool within 30 days, but battery packs, chargers and accessories are not part of that extension, and REDLITHIUM batteries can be extended to 2 years. Makita extends eligible tools to 3 years when registered within 30 days, and since 1 April 2025 its batteries come with a 2-year standard warranty without registration. Always check the current terms on the brand’s UK site before you rely on them.

Which Platform Should You Buy Into?

  • Your firm or your mates already use one brand: join them. Sharing batteries and chargers on site is worth more than small differences in spec.
  • You want one battery for everything, including heavy tools: DeWalt, because FLEXVOLT batteries also power the 18V XR range.
  • You also want garden and outdoor tools: look at Makita LXT and Einhell Power X-Change, which both cover a wide range beyond trade tools. Check the exact tools you need are in the range.
  • You live in your van and want one big rolling stack: Milwaukee pairs naturally with Packout, though Packout boxes hold any brand of tool.
  • You need a specific specialist tool: check it exists on the platform before you commit. Press tools, pipe tools and fixings tools vary a lot between brands.

Buying on Black Friday

Black Friday is the cheapest time of year to buy into a platform, because brands discount kits with batteries and chargers rather than bare tools. Decide on the platform first, then look for a two-tool kit (usually a combi drill and an impact driver) with two batteries. Our best combi drills guide covers the drills, and our Black Friday tool deals guide has what to buy and when. Whatever you buy, register it as soon as it arrives, because the warranty deadlines are only about 28 to 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DeWalt, Makita or Milwaukee better?

None is best for everyone. All three make professional 18V ranges. Pick the one your firm or mates use, check it has the specific tools you need, and compare the warranty terms and storage system before you commit.

Do DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries work in 18V tools?

Yes. DeWalt designs its 54V FLEXVOLT batteries to also power its 18V XR tools, which is one of the main reasons tradespeople choose the DeWalt platform.

Are Makita XGT and LXT batteries interchangeable?

No. Makita's 40V max XGT range uses its own batteries, separate from the 18V LXT range, so plan which system most of your tools will be on.

What warranty do DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee give in the UK?

DeWalt describes 3-year coverage on tools (1-year manufacturing plus 2-year service). Makita and Milwaukee both extend eligible tools to 3 years if you register within 30 days. Battery cover is shorter and differs by brand, so check each brand's current UK terms.

Can I mix brands?

You can own tools from more than one brand, but batteries do not swap between brands without third-party adapters, which manufacturers do not support. Most tradespeople keep their main kit on one platform.
